Minor Household Units - June 2017 Update

The Auckland Unitary Plan became operative on 15 November 2015, and the minor dwelling provisions are - subject to specific standards relating to bulk and location - as follows:

  • A permitted activity (i.e. not requiring resource consent provided development controls are met) in the Single House Zone.
  • A restricted discretionary activity in all Rural, Future Urban; Large Lot; and Rural Coastal Settlement Zones.
  • Specific standards for minor dwellings differ between zones, but in all cases a minor dwelling must not exceed a floor area of 65m2 (excluding decks and garaging).

The Unitary Plan does not provide for minor dwellings within higher intensity residential zones; however additional development is enabled through provisions for multiple household units.
